Welcome to Erlangen: Humboldt Research Award for Prof. Sang Il Seok
We are pleased to warmly welcome Professor Sang Il Seok, a global leader in perovskite solar cell research, to the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). Professor Seok was nominated for the prestigious Humboldt Research Award by Professor Christoph J. Brabec, and was granted it in March 2025. Professor Sang Il Seok, currently affiliated with the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), is an international authority in the field of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and solar energy conversion. He has transformed the concept of sensitization solar cells into an all solid state technology and by that pioneered the development of hybrid perovskite heterojunction devices. His findings fundamentally influenced the development of the perovskite technology, which is discussed to become a technology to assist silicon photovoltaics. Professor Seok introduced key innovations—such as solvent engineering for the preparation of high-quality perovskite films—that have set new global standards and are now widely adopted in laboratories and industry. Professor Seok’s vision and achievements continue to drive the evolution of PSCs toward becoming the next-generation technology in sustainable solar energy.Professor Seok is hosted by Professor Christoph J. Brabec at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg.
